The Secret to Finally Beating Water Retention

water retention

If you know me, you know I’m obsessed with the gym. But let me tell you, the real reason I rush through my last set of lunges is  the pure bliss of my post-workout ritual: hitting the sauna with my dry brush.

Seriously, forget scrolling through your phone. This simple combo is my absolute, number-one trick for fighting those two things that drive us all crazy: stubborn water weight and those frustrating little dimples they call cellulite.

The Week I Nearly Lost It:  My Water Retention Nightmare

Okay, real talk. I’ve always battled puffiness, especially around my face, ankles and thighs. My body just loves to hold onto water like it’s hoarding gold!

I had this terrifying moment a while back where I had to take some cortisone, and my body went into full-blown panic mode. I went absolutely bonkers because I swelled up like a balloon. I kid you not, I trapped so much water I gained 4-5 whole kilograms in 10 days! I fell into a mini-depression because I felt like all my effort at the gym was instantly undone. It was a horrible feeling of total loss of control.

It was this moment that made me get serious about natural ways to drain my system. Honestly, combining dry brushing and the sauna was a game-changer. It helped me flush out all that unwanted water and get back to my normal, happy weight in about 2-3 weeks. But you have to commit to the routine, and hydrate like crazy!

My Simple, Two-Step Detox Duet
So, what exactly does this look like? Right after my sweat session, I grab my stiff-bristled brush and head into the sauna (you can do this right before, too!).

1. The Super Simple Act of Dry Brushing

In the warmth, I just brush, brush, brush. I use long, firm sweeps, always aiming towards my heart. I really concentrate on the areas that hold the most gunk: my legs, my hips, and my stomach.

Why does this feel so good (and work so well)?

Dry Brushing Lymphatic Kickstart: Think of your lymphatic system as your body's garbage truck. When it gets lazy, you feel puffy! Dry brushing is like giving that truck a serious jump-start. It encourages the movement of fluid and waste, hence making it life saving for the water retention problem, making you feel instantly lighter.

Smoothing Out the Cellulite: Because it gets the blood flowing and moves fluid out from under the skin, it really helps blur the appearance of cellulite. It’s not an overnight fix, but stick with it, and you'll see a difference.

The Best Exfoliation: Plus, it scrubs away all those dead skin cells. When I hop in the shower afterward, my skin is ridiculously soft and glowing!

2. The Sauna: Turning Up the Heat on Puffiness

Marrying the brushing with the heat of the sauna is the ultimate tag team.

The Deep Clean: The heat makes you sweat profoundly, which is a fantastic way to flush out toxins and impurities right through your skin. It’s a literal purge!

Better Circulation, Less Bloat: Heat makes your blood vessels open up wide. Essentially, better circulation means your body is much more efficient at delivering oxygen and picking up all that trapped fluid and waste.

The payoff? By hitting the puffiness from two angles, mechanically with the brush and thermally with the heat, I feel like I’m finally in control of my body’s tendency to bloat.

One Final, Non-Negotiable Tip: DRINK! 🥤

This sounds nuts, but if you struggle with water retention, the answer is usually to drink more water, not less!

Your body holds onto water because it thinks it’s dehydrated. It’s a survival mechanism! Therefore, chugging water (especially while you're sitting in the heat!) tells your body, "Hey, we're good! You can let go of the excess." I aim for at least 2.5 litres a day now, and it makes all the difference.

Trust me, this ritual is more than just vanity; it's about feeling comfortable, light, and completely in charge of your own body.
